Game - Blood Bowl Humans vs. Skaven

Another game between my brother and I in other Blood Bowl league. It was my brother's Skaven vs. Humans. Both teams had performed poorly in the league so far having lost all their games.

The Skaven team actually had a much higher Team Value, because they and my Undead team started the league with previous experience. However, the game was very much decided by some unlucky dice rolls for the rats.

So I got a 3-1 win which leaves the rats at the very bottom of the league table.

Start of the game. Humans receive the ball.

Second half. A fumbled pass from the Skaven team leaves the field wide open for the humans.

Humans take a 2-1 lead and then get a blitz on the following kick-off.

League table.

WIP - 15 WW2 Germans

After a couple of idle months I finally managed to get some painting done again. A friend and I are planning to do a Chain of Command pint size campaign, and I'll be playing the Germans.

I have a painted late war German platoon, but it is made according to the main rule book, which is different from the campaign platoon. So I need to paint some more Germans.

Last night I painted the first 10 models. I have a very simple painting method, where I spraypaint the models in a base colour, paint a few details, a wash and then some base flocking. It will not win any painting prizes but it is good enough for me and my battles.

I used Plastic Soldier Company's German Field Grey as base. I don't do any camouflage patterns, and I don't mind using the models for whatever type platoon I'll be playing, even though it will not be historical accurate. I just don't have the painting patience for that.

When all is done I'll take some more pictures 😊

Game - Blood Bowl Undead vs. Chaos

My brother played another league game the other day. This time it was Undead vs. Chaos. These are both my teams, so I to select which one my brother should play. The Undead team is nicely painted and pretty strong, but the Chaos team has a Minotaur, which I love to play with. So in the end I opted for the Chaos team. Naturally, I hoped my teams would get through the game unscathed, but unfortunately that hope was quickly crushed. In my second turn I killed a skeleton and a zombie. Luckily for me, my brother managed to regenerate them. A skill that I had not been so good at utilising so far. But my luck ran out, as not long after I killed one of the Wights who did not regenerate :( Even worse was to come as my brother managed to kill a Chaos Warrior and a Beastman on my Chaos team. So it was a bloody game with 7 casualties in total. The Undead team managed to pull a 2-1 victory which gave them the lead in the league. Now I just need to rebuild the teams again...

Game - Blood Bowl Dwarfs vs. Wood Elves

My Brother and I play Blood Bowl regularly. For now we have 7 teams combined. He has Skaven, Wood Elves and Dwarfs, I have Undead and Chaos, and we kind of share the teams from the box set, Humans and Orcs.

Although it is only the two of us, we still play a league, controlling our own teams when possible. We are still in the (slow) progress of painting the teams, so only 3 teams are painted at the time of writing: Undead, Humans and Dwarfs.

The other night it was Dwarfs vs. Wood Elves. As both teams are my brother's, he had to chose which one I should play. He had just finished painting the Dwarfs, so I got to play the Wood Elves.

Early first half and the Elves still have 11 players on the field

It was a brutal game for the Wood Elves. After an early 1-0 lead the Elves started losing players and was unable to prevent the the Dwarfs taking a 2-1 victory.

1-1 at half time. The Elves are already 3 elves short

Despite a valiant effort the Elves couldn't prevent the Dwarfs from scoring a late winner

Casualties were very one-sided

The League as it stands. It should be noted that the Undead team Deadly Devils and the Skaven team Dodgetown Rats already had some experience when we started the league.

Game – 6mm Sword & Spear – Pontic vs Early Imperial Romans

This Sunday I got to play a game of Sword & Spear against Torben, one of my regular opponents. This was our 4th game this year. My 6mm collection consists of Ancient Spanish, Early Imperial Romans and Pontic, which I believe can easily be mixed to form various armies. We played 500 pts., and I made a Pontic army and Torben made an Early Imperial Roman.

My army:
1 General and 2 Captains - 105 pts.
2 Phalanx, heavy foot(L) - 84 pts.
2 Thureophoroi, medium foot - 36 pts.
1 Slingers, light foot - 9 pts.
3 Javelinmen, light foot - 27 pts.
4 Imitation Legionaries, heavy foot(D5) - 72 pts.
2 Archers, medium foot - 24 pts.
2 Heavy Cavalry, armoured - 64 pts.
1 Light Cavalry - 15 pts.
1 Scythian Horse Archers - 18 pts.
1 Sarmatian Cavalry - 40 pts.
1 Camp - 0 pts.
I alt 494 pts., 67 army value (23/34)

Torben’s army (from my memory):

1 General and 2 Captains

1 Veteran Legionaries

3 Legionaries

3 Auxilia, medium foot

2 Cavalry (D3)

2 Allied Archers

1 Slingers

2 Light Cavalry

1 Allied Horse Archers

1 Bolt Shooters

1 Camp

In Sword & Spear there is a terrain system where the players try to place the terrain most advantageous. There is, however, some randomness involved, so it will always be different. This time we ended up with a very open battlefield with only a little rough ground on the Roman right flank. That resulted in a very classic deployment in on long line with the heavy foot in the center and cavalry on both flanks.

I decided to try and attack on my left flank and get through to the Roman camp using my Sarmatian Cavalry. I was hesitant to advance in the center because of the Bolt Shooters Torben had deployed there. On my right flank I ended up advancing forward to keep the Roman cavalry away. Torben took a rather defensive position, so I ended doing most of the attacking.

My idea was that my Sarmatian cavalry would punch through on the left flank, but due to some poor deployment and advancing, it was one of my other cavalry units that did most of the fighting. However, they performed excellently and managed to kill off a unit of Roman Cavalry, light cavalry and auxiliary medium foot, and almost also caught the unguarded camp.

I was outnumbered on my right flank, but my 2 mounted units and a unit of Thureophoroi medium foot managed to hold out long enough for me to secure the victory elsewhere.

My to large formations of Pike phalanxes started advancing mid-through the battle, after my archers killed of the Roman Bolt Shooters. They tried to attack the Roman legionaries, who wisely decided to withdraw as they had no immediately support. The battle ended before my pikemen could engage the Romans.

End of the game. My right flank has disintegrated, but they held out long enough and took a few units down so that combined with my victorious left flank attack I won the day.

It was another great game between Torben and I. Sword & Spear is one of my favourite games, and all of our games are close and fun. The rules are rather straight forward, but since we often play with months in between, we do use extra time to look up rules. Our relatively inexperience also impact our tactics, which could be better, but I feel we are improving. We do feel that sometimes actions and movements that seem tactical sound, does not pay off as well as expected. Perhaps that will change with further games and understanding of the rules and tactics of the period.

I have several other ancients rulesets but for now Sword & Spear remains my preferred. However, we may try some of the others at some point, so we better can compare them.

Welcome...

...to my world of wargaming. My name is Martin and on this blog I will show my activities in my gaming hobby. It will hopefully motivate me to collect, game and paint even more. And hopefully I will connect with many of you out there in this great community.

I play fantasy, sci-fi and historical. I play 6mm, 10mm, 15mm and 28mm. I play solo and against regular opponents, and with any luck new opponents. I mostly play table-top games, but occasionalyy also board and card games.

I hope you find something interesting here and stick around. Please feel free to comment. I would love to hear from you.
